As a vendor in the data management space we’re excited to see an increasing number of firms realize that their data is an asset. And as a provider of governance oriented solutions, we’ve been delighted to see organizations create the role of chief data officer--making someone accountable for the coordination of corporate data policies, practices, and strategy. As we often tell our customers and prospects, at the root of many data management problems is a lack of clarity around who are the individuals that are responsible, accountable, consulted or informed around a domain of data. Identifying the accountable party is a key step in moving towards coherence around data governance.
That said, for many organizations segregation of duties means separation between “accountable” CDOs that make policy and “responsible” information technology and line of business executives that implement policy. Finding ways to improve communications between these teams is the topic of our new whitepaper: “Establishing an integrated data governance and data management foundation for BCBS 239 compliance and beyond.” Using the four pillars of BCBS 239 and customer examples, this paper advances the concept of an integrated approach to data governance and data management. We propose a technology foundation that makes the automation of governance possible by improving the integration between data governance and data management. We also describe what we see are the key data architecture, organizational and methodological implications.
